How ChatGPT Can Contribute to Non-Profits’ Productivity

Team Social Xleration, 18th April 2023

Since ChatGPT got introduced in late 2022, not a day passes by without news of the different uses and capabilities of this Artificial Intelligence Technology, which has been developed by OpenAI. The long form of this acronym is ‘chatbot powered by GPT-3’, which is a natural language processing technology that enables machines to understand human language. A recent article describes it as a technology, which is based on transformer architecture and is trained on a massive corpus of data, allowing it to generate human-like text in real-time.

It has managed to create quite a buzz in various sectors globally. The non-profit sector too, point out sector watchers, can benefit immensely from this technology. Among the ways it could be used is by improving accessibility since non-profits often find it difficult to serve people living in remote or neglected areas. ChatGPT can surmount this barrier by integrating into websites and mobile apps, thus, enabling them to access non-profit services from any area at any time. With the ability of this technology to automate repetitive tasks, ChatGPT can bring in more efficiency in a number of tasks such as automating conversations and addressing different people’s queries. This will free up human resources whose time and abilities can be put to use for other works of higher significance.

With its evolved research capabilities, ChatGPT can help a non-profit identify and research the various segments it wants to target. They can include donors, volunteers, and beneficiaries. It can provide detailed information about these segments by different criteria which can include areas with low levels of services that the non-profit offers. The non-profits can build a strong case for their services to be provided to people in such areas and pitch them effectively to potential donors, which again can be identified by ChatGPT using a search query.

An important aspect of the work of non-profits is outreach and engagement with a wide variety of people. ChatGPT can help in the development of a plethora of content comprising social media updates, e-news, press releases, and so on. This technology can also assist non-profits in sending personalized emails to important stakeholders such as donors or government officials. Besides, it is an effective tool to help with proofreading and editing work, which can enhance the quality of the content to a significant extent.

While there is no denying that the technology can be an excellent enhancer for non-profits in performing various tasks with high efficiency, there are certain limitations as well. This includes the fact that the technology’s knowledge on some topics might be limited despite it being backed by huge datasets and as a result, it might not be able to answer certain specific queries. It might also make errors on certain topics or provide incomprehensible responses. Moreover, it lacks the emotional intelligence required to operate in the complex and multi-contextual non-profit sector. It cannot also substitute the nuanced approach and solutions provided by professionals developed through years of experience in this sector. More importantly, experts point out that it cannot replace human-to-human interactions. That said, despite these limitations, the technology is useful for non-profits in various ways. Thus, non-profits should make an effort to integrate it into their different functions, where it has proven capability.
