Program on International Girl Child Day Held

On December 19, 2011, the UN General Assembly passed resolution 66/170, designating October 11 as International Day of the Girl Child. The day is devoted to promoting girls’ rights and highlighting the unique challenges that girls confront around the world. This year saw the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl being commemorated. The International Day of the Girl Child’s theme for 2022 was “Our time is now—our rights, our future.” Social Xleration held an information-cum-discussion session on the day in Janigaon village in Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh. Almost 30 children (mostly girls), three female facilitators from the village, and three male facilitators were present for the session. The significance of the girl child in India and Uttar Pradesh was one of the main topics highlighted. A brief history of the observance of International Child Day was explained. The importance of recognizing the glory, respect and potential of women and girls around the world was also highlighted. The issue of gender equality and the responsibility of society to make girl children self-reliant was also discussed.
