Raising Consciousness on Breastfeeding through Events during the World Breastfeeding Week

1 to 7 August 2023, Hardoi and Barabanki districts, Uttar Pradesh

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is a global campaign that aims to raise awareness and take action on topics related to breastfeeding. It is celebrated every year from August 1st to 7th, in remembrance of the 1990 Innocenti Declaration. As part of the Declaration, in 1990, a group of people from 30 countries and various organizations came together and decided to make a plan to increase breastfeeding rates worldwide. WBW started in 1992 and since 2016, WBW has been aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to promote breastfeeding. The theme for the year 2023 is “Let’s make breastfeeding and work, work!”. Continuing its support of the cause, Social Xleration organized a slew of events in Uttar Pradesh to mark this important event.

The first event, held on 1 August 2023, was an information and discussion session that took place in Janigaon, Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh. The event aimed to raise awareness among the local community. The topics covered included the importance of breastfeeding, the Innocenti Declaration, the theme of the week, and the roles of organizations like the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI). The benefits of breastfeeding and the composition of human milk were also discussed. Around 30 people, including mothers and children, attended the event. This was followed by similar events for students in the Hardoi district on 2 and 3 August 2023 in which 50 and 90 students participated respectively. The last such event was held on 7 August 2023 in Composite School, Banikondar of Barabanki district, Uttar Pradesh, which was attended by 32 students.
