20 August 2020, Malkangiri District, Odisha

With an aim to further consolidate and mainstream fish farming among the local farmers, Social Xleration provided 20 kg fingerlings to 10 groups comprising 10 farmers each in Chitrakonda block of Malkangiri district on 20 August 2020. This is the third consecutive year in which Social Xleration continued its focus on fish farming in the area. The distributed fingerlings comprised major Indian carps such as Rohu, Katla, Mrigal, Grass Carp, and Silver Carp. The initiative again covered the targeted villages of Purnapani, Narsinghpur, RSC- 10, RSC- 11, and RSC- 19 in Malkangiri district. The activity is gradually enabling farmers belonging to tribal communities to earn extra income from fishing apart from farming.

The Social Xleration team maintains constant touch with the farmers and provide then technical inputs such as correct feeding practices, how fish growth can be boosted, and to identify diseases among fishes. Social Xleration also helps farmers in checking the quality of the fish and also develops local market linkages for the sale of fish. The initiative has caught the eyes of other local farmers, who also have expressed an interest in taking up the activity. Going forward, Social Xleration plans to further intensify fish farming in the area to further enhance farmers’ income.
