25 January 2020, Dhule

Furthering the cause of enhancing the incomes of small and marginal farmers, Social Xleration organized a training on goat farming on 25th January 2020 in the resource-poor village of Shindkheda village, Rohane Grampanchayat in Dhule district. The training was helmed by Mr. Rahul More, who has extensive experience in goat farming. It was attended by 20 farmers. Dhule district has around 74 percent of the population living in rural areas with agriculture being the main occupation. The district stays dry during the whole year except during the south-west monsoon season. The average annual rainfall is 674.0 mm. The main idea behind the training was to promote diversification among the participating farmers and enable them to have an extra source of income through goat farming. Goats are especially poor-people friendly source of income since they can be maintained in a limited area and can sustain on a wide variety of vegetation in varied agro‐climatic conditions. Besides, they are easy to manage. The training focused on the available breeds such as Sangamneri and Jamnapari and Osmanabadi, right breed selection for the region, feeding practices and care to be taken. Information on government schemes promoting goat rearing was also shared. The farmers were provided the certificate of participation at the end of the training. The farmers also evinced keen interest and requested guidance on taking up goat rearing in their backyards.
