23 November 2018, Malkangiri District, Odisha

A priority area for Social Xleration is the enhancement of the farm livelihoods of small and marginal farmers. Giving action to this priority, Social Xleration partnered with a local NGO, Devcon India Foundation to provide vegetable seeds among 200 farmers in different villages of Malkangiri district in Odisha to enable them to boost vegetable cultivation. Vegetable cultivation has been acknowledged by farmers as a viable economic opportunity and an important element in farm diversification. Moreover, besides selling vegetables in the market, the farmers can use some amount of vegetables for self-consumption since they are a good source of essential elements such as vitamins and minerals, which can improve the health status of the cultivator’s family. The initiative covered 17 villages of Chitrakonda block, where vegetable seeds of ladyfinger, brinjal, pumpkin, cucumber, beans, bitter guard and tomato were distributed to farmers to enhance their incomes. Besides, providing vegetable seeds the team members of Social Xleration and Devcon India Foundation regularly visit the farmers and provide technical inputs required for the successful cultivation of vegetables. Social Xleration is keen to scale-up various farm diversification strategies among small and marginal farmers in its areas of operations.
